Health center plants community garden to address food security

KI SAWYER, Mich. (WLUC) – A U.P. health center is helping its community address food security with a community garden.

Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center in K.I. Sawyer planted its Health and Wellness Garden on Monday. Staff and community members planted a wide variety of nutrient-rich vegetables like tomatoes, broccoli, and beans.

As the veggies grow, people will be able to stop by the garden and will have access to the food.

“There’s not a lot of fresh produce available in the community, so this will give community members an opportunity to come to a garden and get those fresh vegetables and fresh fruits and bring them into their homes,” said Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center Practice Manager Sarah Tregembo.

The health center is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house on Friday, June 27 to celebrate the new community garden and answer questions about the organization.
