CAVE CREEK, AZ (AZFamily) — A local nonprofit is taking an $8 million step in the fight against hunger in the north Valley, and that’s Something Good.
The Foothills Food Bank and Resource Center is celebrating the grand opening of its new campus in Cave Creek. The campus includes the Mirabel Marketplace, a grocery store-like environment where families can select items of their choice.
“It’s a special opportunity for them to come in. It gives them some dignity like they’re going into a grocery store. They can pick from their own items. We got everything from the nonperishables to meat, to produce, to deli. We set limits and they shop by their household size, but they get to choose their own items,” said Lauren, who has been with the Foothills Food Bank for three years.
Reservations are scheduled ahead of time and can be made on the Foothills Food Bank website.
There is also a demonstration kitchen area where people can start attending cooking classes this fall to learn how to make healthy dishes.
The Foothills Food Bank says they want people who come to the campus to feel uplifted. “Be able to do more than get food. We want skills to survive,” said Leigh Zydonik, Executive Director, Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center.
