New North Rapid buffalo meat store strives to address food insecurity, provide jobs

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Sacred Storm Buffalo opened its doors to the public with a grand opening Saturday. The group processes and sells affordable buffalo meat in North Rapid, with stated goals of giving young Lakota men job opportunities in meat processing and combatting food insecurity.

The business is named for Founder & CEO Chris White Eagle’s late granddaughter, who tragically passed away in 2022.

”Her name was Aiko Storm, so this was in remembrance of her,” White Eagle said. “Sacred Storm, that’s how we came up with the name.”

White Eagle has been working for years to make Sacred Storm a reality. A $1.6 million grant from NDN Collective helped get the project started.

”This is exactly the kind of project that we’re proud to help support, and it shows what can happen when you combine grants and affordable small business loans to be able to kick off amazing projects,” NDN Collective President Wizipan Little Elk Garriott said.

Sacred Storm Buffalo’s new retail shop is located at 1601 Haines Avenue in Rapid City and is now open for business.
