HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) – The Copper Country Farm Bureau hosted its annual Farm on the Town Day in Hancock on Saturday.
Emmy Mitchell went with her husband and kids to get a glimpse of what she grew up near. Her grandparents had a farm, and she knows the effort it takes to run one.
“Some people just think it’s easy,” Mitchell said. “All you need to do is pick a tomato or pick a potato out of the ground, and it’s as easy as that, but they don’t see all the weed picking and everything else that goes along with it.”
Copper Country Farm Bureau Promotion and Education co-chair Judy Szyszkoski says the event connects the youth with farming.
“So few people are actually actively farming these days, and a lot of kids aren’t exposed to those things, like how do you get maple syrup,” Szyszkoski said.
Kids could find all the answers at stations that highlighted different parts of farming. Maple syrup farmer Greg Staricha says many people don’t know the work put into food items. He says 40 gallons of tree sap only make a gallon of syrup. Staricha hopes that when kids get a taste of real maple syrup, it’ll turn into a taste for agriculture as a career or a hobby.
“You know young farmers they are our future,” Staricha said. “If we don’t teach young farmers then what are we going to do in the future. You know, maple syrup’s something you can do in your own backyard, Three trees and you can make a couple gallons of syrup.”
Mitchell hopes to get land and grow a garden with her family.
“Them being able to actually plant their food and see it grow themselves is something amazing that all kids should have to experience,” Mitchell said.
