‘They don’t get the same opportunities’: Creighton hosts abilities camp for kids with special needs

THE CHANCE TO SHOOT SOME HOOPS AND LEARN SOME SKILLS TODAY. IT ALL HAPPENED AT CREIGHTON’S ANNUAL ABILITIES BASKETBALL CAMP. NEWSWATCH SEVEN AT NINE’S MARY REGLI SHOWS US HOW ATHLETES ARE MAKING SURE EVERYONE FEELS INCLUDED. FOR KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS, THEY MAY NOT GET THE CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN SPORTS. KIDS CAN BOOST THEIR BASKETBALL AND AGILITY SKILLS AS THEY LEARN TECHNIQUES FROM BLUEJAY ATHLETES AND PHYSICAL THERAPY STUDENTS IN THE ANNUAL CREIGHTON ABILITIES CAMP. PT STUDENTS SAY IT HELPS THEM GET OUT OF THE CLASSROOM AND PRACTICE HANDS ON LEARNING. CREIGHTON BASKETBALL’S JOSH DIX JUST TRANSFERRED TO THE TEAM, BUT HE’S FITTING RIGHT IN AS HE HELPS OUT THE CAMPERS. HE’S ALSO GOT A SPECIAL CONNECTION TO THE CAMP. Creighton abilities camp empowers kids with special needs through basketball

Creighton University’s annual abilities camp in Omaha provides children with special needs the opportunity to learn basketball skills from Bluejay athletes and physical therapy students, offering a unique hands-on learning experience.”It’s a time to take what we’ve learned from class and kind of put it in a real-world experience and give these kids the opportunity to tell, you know, hang out with the basketball team, but also learn how to, like, be with the adaptive equipment,” a physical therapy student said.Josh Dix, who recently transferred to the Creighton basketball team, is helping out at the camp and has a personal connection, as his brother participated this year.”It was cool, you know, he shot some baskets, you know, dribbled around a little bit,” Dix said.Dix emphasized the importance of the camp, noting the special experience it provides for his brother and other campers.”They don’t get the same opportunities as everyone all the time.
