MOUNDSVILLE — The Moundsville and Cameron Healthcare Centers have community fundraising events planned in June to celebrate Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month.

The Moundsville HCC will host a car show on Friday, June 13, at 2200 Floral Street in Moundsville. The Cameron HCC will host a Community Night on Thursday, June 26, at 20 Wilson Drive in Cameron.

Registration for the car show will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on June 13. The event is free for residents.

There is a $10 admission fee to enter a car in the show. Attendees can pre-register by contacting Communicare Director of Public Relations Samantha Walters at 304-238-6666.

The show can host up to 75 cars. Walters said more than 20 cars have registered so far.

The Moundsville HCC will host the event with the Moundsville Cruisers Car Club, and the entire club will participate in the show.

“Our goal is to have as many cars in the same lot as possible,” Walters said. “Based on the size of our lot and space, we will cap that at 75 cars. We have plenty of spots available if anyone would like to pre-register.”

Judging for the car show will begin at 7:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to Best in Show, People’s Choice and Resident’s Choice.

All participants will receive dash plaques. The top 20 cars in the show will receive special dash plaques featuring artwork designed by Moundsville HCC Activities Director Nancy Hall.

A chance auction and 50/50 raffle will be held at 7:30 p.m. Local organizations and businesses, including Amedisys Home Health Care, Happy Tails Pet Salon, Allied Realty, WesBanco, Wood Scraps, the Marshall County Family Resource Network and Grand Vue Park, have donated gift baskets.

The Dairy Jean food truck will sell ice cream throughout the event, and other snacks and drinks will be available.

The McMechen Volunteer Fire Department will also display its antique fire truck during the event.

“Volunteer fire departments are such a huge staple in a community like Marshall County, and we really appreciate them and supporting us with EMT services,” Walters said. “Being able to highlight McMechen’s VFD antique truck and have it on display is really cool.”

All entry fees and any other proceeds raised during the event will be donated to the Moundsville HCC’s team for the Upper Ohio Valley Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sept. 21. All proceeds raised from the walk go to the Alzheimer’s Association.

The Moundsville HCC will also have resource tables during the car show to provide information about the Alzheimer’s Association and prevention of the disease. Walters noted they provide respite care to support caregivers and give them a temporary rest while the person with Alzheimer’s can receive care in a safe environment.

“Caregiver burnout is a real issue, so we offer respite services to support them,” Walters said. ‘We will also have pamphlets and flyers available during the show that provide information about what you can do today to keep your brain active to prevent Alzheimer’s.”

In addition to fundraising for a good cause, Walters is excited that the car show will provide a fun night for Moundsville HCC residents.

“Everybody at the healthcare center is looking forward to it,” Walters said. “All the residents are super excited- I’ve heard all kinds of conversations about old Buicks, Oldsmobiles and Chevy pickup trucks.”

The Cameron HCC will host its Community Night on June 16 from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will include tables for local businesses, a Chinese auction, a 50/50 raffle, entertainment and cornhole.

Local businesses will set up tables in the Cameron HCC center parking lot to sell baked goods and other locally made products. Participating businesses include Almost Heaven Bakery, Bread & Butter Deli, Bridge Street Restaurant and Dragon Mart.

Cameron HCC Culinary Director Dave Minor will also serve the Cameron HCC residents’ favorite “Soup of the Day” options at his table.

“Everyone at the healthcare center gets excited for Dave’s ‘Soup of the Day’ at lunchtime and guesses what it’s going to be,” Walters said. “Everybody loves it, from the staff to the residents, so he will sell some of his soups at the booth.”

A portion of table sales will be donated to Cameron HCC’s Walk to End ALZ team.

Walters hopes the event will serve as an opportunity to gather the Cameron community together for a good cause.

“This is something that will bring the entire community of Cameron together,” Walters said. “Attendees can purchase products from these local businesses, including pepperoni rolls and other baked goods. These businesses will then kindly share some of their proceeds to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.”
