LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Jefferson County Public Schools is once again helping Jefferson County kids by giving out free meals during summer break.
Last summer, district leaders said they served over 136,000 breakfast meals and over 240,000 lunches to families in Jefferson County.
This year, JCPS has 119 different sites around the county. Of those, 68 are JCPS school sites where kids can get hot meals.
There are also 38 mobile stops for families who can’t make it to the schools.
If none of those options work, you can pick up prepackaged meals at Beckley Park, Evangel World Prayer Center or the PRP Fire Training Center on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
One of the school sites is Carter Traditional Elementary. Principal Dr. Whitney Hodge said for her students, it’s needed.
“We live in a food desert, and so the nearest grocery store is not near at all, so that again helps with our students to be able to get that hot meal,” Hodge said.
For kids who usually get two meals a day at school, having access to meals over the summer is crucial.
“There is a such thing as a summer slide, it does exist. So knowing that these students are well nourished and fed throughout the summer does help when they return to school,” said Hodge.
