Food insecurity increasing across western slope, officials say

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – The Food Bank of the Rockies is highlighting food insecurity in Mesa County.

According to a National Study from Feeding America, new numbers show food insecurity is growing across the western slope with a 21% increase since 2019.

Officials with Food Bank of the Rockies say 1 in 8 individuals may not know where their next meal will come from.

The number is greater in Mesa County, with 1 in 7 people.

Officials say the reason for the growth is the increased cost of living and groceries, and the end of pandemic-era relief programs.

Officials also say support for the community can be done through volunteering at the food bank or donations.
