Portland kids gather for Rose Festival’s Junior Parade

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – Portland’s Hollywood District was filled with thousands of kids for the Rose Festival’s annual Fred Meyer Junior Parade on Wednesday.

The Fred Meyer Junior Parade officially became part of the Rose Festival back in 1936, almost 90 years ago, and is designed to celebrate kids in the metro area.

It’s the oldest and largest children’s parade in the nation, and from marching bands, cheerleaders, to clowns, it has something for everyone.

“I like all the kids, how they’re so happy to see a llama, maybe even for the first time,” said Emily Farmer, who was walking her llama, Beni, in the parade.

The parade is a highlight of the Rose Festival season, and the community worked together to make sure local kids got to enjoy the festivities.

Thousands of Portlanders gathered downtown Saturday for the 2025 Starlight Parade – one of the Rose Festival’s most popular events.

On Wednesday, Portland-area students had an extra-short school day to be able to watch the parade.

“We had a 2-hour and 15-minute school day,” said Charlie Gosselin.

From the llamas to the musical performances, everyone has their favorite part of the two-hour-long parade. But both spectators and participants alike said the best part of it all was seeing everyone come together to celebrate each other.

“All the kids are gathered up and they’re so excited,” Farmer said.

The biggest Rose Festival Event of the Season, the Grand Floral Parade, is just days away.

The parade starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 8. The parade will start near City Fair on Naito Parkway and end near Providence Park on Southwest Taylor Street.
