Northwest Sports Update: Bells’ pitching headlines home opener, Mariners fumble division lead, clarity on Seahawks QB1 and more

Bells News

The Bells got a shutout victory to open their season in Bellingham. They beat the Kamloops NorthPaws 3-0 last night to improve to 3-1 on the season.

The Bells scored all of their runs in the first inning when Gavin Long drew a leadoff walk and later scored off an infield single by Alex Fernandes. Stanford commit and projected early-round MLB draft pick Brock Sell followed with another run off a wild pitch and Noah Cassie hit an RBI single to cap the inning off.

Former West Coast League All-Star Cal Young tossed three scoreless innings in the start to lead a strong outing from the Bells’ pitchers. They only allowed two hits and struck out seven in the shutout.

The Bells handed Kamloops their first loss of the season and have a chance to secure the series in Game 2 tonight. First pitch is at 6:35 from Joe Martin Field and make sure you stick around to catch the post-game fireworks.

Mariners News

The Mariners couldn’t find that same success last night. They fell to the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 in the series opener at T-Mobile. Rowdy Tellez hit a solo homer in the second inning to tie the game, but the M’s couldn’t muster up any more offense in the loss.

George Kirby gave the team a scare when he was hit in the face by a line drive in the fifth. He was bleeding from his mouth as he walked off the field, but said after the game that he’s ok, adding that “it didn’t even hurt.” Still, he gave up two runs through five innings to earn his third straight loss since returning from the injured list. JP Crawford was a bright spot, going 3-4 from the plate in his fourth straight multi-hit game.

Meanwhile, the Houston Astros got a win yesterday and overtook the Mariners for first place in the AL West. The M’s will try to bounce back tonight in Game 2 against the Orioles with Emerson Hancock on the mound. Coverage begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KPUG.

A key starter could soon return for the M’s as the division race heats up. Mariners insider Shannon Drayer reports that Logan Gilbert is making his next rehab start with Triple-A Tacoma tonight. The 2024 All-Star has been out since late April with a flexor strain in his right elbow. Manager Dan Wilson says the club will evaluate what’s next for Gilbert after tonight’s start with Tacoma.

MLB News

Now’s the time to help send your favorite Mariners to the Midsummer Classic. Voting is officially underway for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta.

Fans can vote for eight starting positions players and designated hitter in each league. That first round of voting will run through June 26, when the top vote-getter in each league will become a starter, while the other top vote-getters advance to the second round. The pitchers and reserves will be decided by player ballots and the Commissioner’s Office.

The Mariners had two All-Stars last year in Logan Gilbert and Andrez Munoz. But Cal Raleigh is making a strong case for his first All-Star selection as the current major league leader in home runs. He could become the first Mariners catcher ever to start in the All-Star Game and the second to get the All-Star nod, joining manager Dan Wilson.

Storm News

The Storm made a furious second-half comeback last night to snap their losing streak. Gabby Williams scored 18 points to help Seattle beat the Dallas Wings 83-77. The Storm trailed by eight points at halftime, but rallied for 53 points in the second half to snap their three-game skid.

The Wings were without No.1 overall pick Paige Bueckers, who was out in concussion protocol. Seattle’s No. 2 overall pick Dominique Malonga scored a season-high 6 points and blocked a shot to help the team even up to 4-4 on the season.

The Storm are back on the road this weekend to face the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday night.

Seahawks News

The Seahawks’ top brass has put to rest any doubt of who will be QB1 this season. During an interview with Seattle Sports Radio yesterday, head coach Mike Macdonald was asked whether there was any possibility that Sam Darnold could be beat out for starting quarterback. He called it a “crazy question” and said “it’s just not going to happen.”

The question came a day after Darnold threw two red zone interceptions amid an up-and-down performance at OTAs.  Macdonald admitted that Darnold has made mistakes, but emphasized that it’s still early in the offseason training program. Sitting behind him in the Seahawks quarterback room is veteran backup Drew Lock and third-round draft pick Jalen Milroe.
