New start on wheels delivered to burn victims in Glendale food truck fire

GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — A Glendale family whose food truck burned to the ground, injuring two siblings, is being given a fresh start. Sun Health, a Phoenix nonprofit, is helping make that happen.

The organization said that after seeing last month’s story about the devastating fire, they decided to act. Members from Sun Health and Discount Tire pulled up in a brand-new food truck equipped with six new tires and a new generator at the Jalal family home in Glendale on Wednesday afternoon.

Kamal and Selara Jalal, co-owners of the Halimah Food Truck, said they couldn’t believe their eyes as they watched the food truck roll up to their driveway. “I’m happy. I was like, a donation for me?” Selera said in disbelief.

“I’m excited for a new food truck so we can continue our family’s business,” Kamal added.

The siblings, still wrapped in bandages and they had visible burns across their bodies. On May 15, their Halimah Food Truck burst into flames while both were still trapped inside. Selara said her brother took the brunt of the flames to his face, losing all his hair.

She says her hijab saved her from losing her own hair.

The family pointed to the power of prayer to get them through the difficult time. “I believe God guarded my life, saved my life,” Kamal said.

Sun Health said they had the food truck for a while. They originally were trying to sell it but decided to donate it instead. “When we saw the story, we thought, what a great home for this food truck, to have a family who can use it to build their future,” Nora Hannah, the chief engagement officer for Sun Health, said.

Discount Tire donated the six tires. “For us, it’s simple. If we need to stop our day-to-day to help a family like this, we will absolutely do that,” Discount Tire assistant vice president Jose Contreres added.

Selara said it’s too soon to say when they might start again but said the donation has brought her family peace and hope as they look to the future.
