Families say kids got chemical burns from Cape Cod hotel pool, hot tub

Several families are speaking out to alert others of a serious situation that they said impacted a lot of guests at a Cape Cod hotel — something they feel the hotel management continues to dismiss and downplay.”For some, it was itching, burning, some were complete sheets of red skin, some were bubbles, speckled red skin,” mother Blair Moran said.Moran is talking about what happened to her family’s skin after they used the pools and hot tub at the Ocean Mist resort in Yarmouth. Dozens of families like hers were on the Cape over Memorial Day weekend for a soccer tournament.That Saturday evening, many of the kids in their party jumped in the resort’s pools and hot tub and came away hurting.”It was like smelling like chlorine and chemicals, and our eyes were starting to burn,” 9-year-old Meredith Cronin said.”My eyes were really stingy and they were all red for a whole day,” Aislyn Moran said.”There’s red marks all over my legs, my stomach,” 9-year-old Hadley Moran said.In addition to the burns, the water bleached the ends of a girl’s hair and another girl’s swimsuit.”Our kids were crying,” Blair Moran said. “I mean, we were sort of lost as to what the exact cause was and how to help them.”Other parents sent NewsCenter 5 photos and expressed their frustration off-camera. They said other hotel guests were dealing with similar symptoms.Yet, when the front desk staff reached out to the manager by phone, Blair Moran said their response was “no, we tested the water earlier, it’s fine.”NewsCenter 5 reached out to Newport Hotel Group, but have not heard back.In response to a critical review Blair Moran left online, the hotel owner said in part, “our hot tub and pools are maintained daily by a Certified Pool Operator. In addition, the health department also inspected all of our pools and hot tubs after the report of your concerns, and they passed all health department standards.”The Yarmouth Director of Inspectional Services confirmed that, but acknowledged the pools and hot tub were not tested by the health department until three days after the kids had used them.Blair Moran told NewsCenter 5 that despite the obvious signs that something was wrong that Saturday, the resort manager never did close the pools or hot tub, and still hasn’t personally reached out to them.
