Sydney Sweeney’s Ambitious Video Game Movie Just Scored an Amazon Victory

Generate Key Takeaways

One of the hottest video games of 2025 has already been fast-tracked to become a major motion picture. The genre-bending multi-player game Split Fiction hit PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows back in March, and is now going to be a film starring Sydney Sweeney, with a script from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers behind Deadpool & Wolverine. The in-development movie is directed by  Jon M. Chu and now has a very secure future.

Like the upcoming next James Bond film, Split Fiction has just been acquired by Amazon and MGM studios, according to a new report from Variety.

Split Fiction is a cooperative game focused on two playable writer characters: Mio and Zoe. In the plot of the game, something called The Machine puts people directly into the stories they’ve created, which causes Zoe and Mio to suddenly become intertwined in each other’s fantasy and science fiction worlds. Think of it like The Matrix meets Ready Player One, meets an episode of Black Mirror.

Presumably, Sweeney will play Zoe in the film. She is also set to executive produce the movie.

As of this time, Split Fiction, the film, does not yet have a release date. Interestingly, the game itself has not even finished its full rollout on different platforms. As of June 5, 2025, Split Fiction is expected to hit Nintendo Switch for the first time. If you haven’t played it yet, just know this: You can’t play it alone. Everything about this game requires it to be played with one other person, which is part of the metafictional concept and the riveting gameplay.

Will the movie capture the essence of this unique idea? We can only hope.
