The Mariners ended two games in walk off fashion over the weekend to win their series against the Twins. On Saturday, top prospect Cole Young drove in Miles Mastrobuoni in the 10th inning to earn the walk off win in his first game as a Mariner. Then yesterday, Randy Arozarena hit a game winning single in the bottom of the ninth to give the M’s a 2-1 win and the series.
It came two innings after Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 23rd homer of the season. Cal hit four home runs during the weekend series to help earn American League co-Player of the Week honors.
The weekend also saw the return of Bryce Miller to the starting rotation. He struggled on Saturday, giving up three early runs through four innings. But Luis Castillo followed with a masterful performance yesterday, tossing six shutout innings to keep the Mariners in the game.
The M’s are still clinging onto a half-game lead over the Astros for first place in the AL West. They’ll continue their homestand this week against the Baltimore Orioles, who sit in last place in the AL East. Coverage for tomorrow’s series opener begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KPUG.
Mariners fans will be seeing double 51s next season. The team announced today that Randy Johnson’s No. 51 jersey will be retired during the 2026 season. It came as today is the 35th anniversary of Johnson throwing the first no-hitter in M’s history.
The delay in his jersey retirement comes as Ichiro is set to have his No. 51 retired as well this August, coinciding with his Hall of Fame induction. They become the third and fourth Mariners to have their number retired, along with Ken Griffey Jr.’s No. 24 and Edgar Martinez’s No. 11.
Bells News
The Bellingham Bells rang in their season with a series win. The Bells took two out of three games against the NightOwls in Nanaimo over the weekend. Last year’s team leader in hits Nate Kirkpatrick picked up right where he left off, going 3-4 at the plate in yesterday’s game.
The Bells are now back in Bellingham ahead of their home opener tomorrow night. First pitch is at 6:35 from Joe Martin Field.
Sounders/Reign News
The Sounders lost a tight one on Saturday. Seattle fell to Minnesota United 3-2 at Lumen Field. Minnesota scored all three of its goals within an eight-minute span early in the second half to hand the Sounders their first home loss of the season.
Meanwhile, the Seattle Reign fell to the Washington Spirit 2-1.
Storm News
It was also a rough weekend for the Storm. They had a pair of single-digit losses at home to the Atlanta Dream and Las Vegas Aces. Former Storm star Jewell Loyd had 10 points and 4 steals for the Aces in her return to Seattle last night. The Storm have lost three straight heading into their matchup against No.1 overall pick Page Bueckers and the Dallas Wings tomorrow night.
Prep Sports News
Sehome’s boys soccer team fought its way towards a third-place finish at state over the weekend. The Mariners missed out on their return to the championship game after they fell to Columbia River 1-0 in the semifinals on Friday in their first loss of the year. But Sehome edged out Bainbridge 2-1 on Saturday to earn their third straight top-three finish. They end the season with a 20-1-2 record.
The prep baseball postseason was a lot louder for Skagit County than here in Whatcom. Mount Vernon’s offense exploded for a 14-6 win over Kennewick in the 3A championship game on Saturday. It was the Bulldogs’ first baseball state championship in 33 years. Anacortes also reached the 2A championship, but they got no-hit in a 3-0 loss to Bainbridge at Joe Martin Field on Saturday. It was the Seahawks’ first baseball state title appearance in school history.
WWU Rowing News
Western’s rowing team battled its way to a bronze medal team finish at the national championships over the weekend. The defending champion Vikings fell just short of their 10th national title and finished in third place, just behind Cal Poly Humboldt. The team’s varsity 8+ earned a silver medal in Courtney Moeller’s first year as head coach.
