The food truck Taqueria Gonzalez has expanded into the former Burger Time building on West 12th Street.
Owner Ricardo Gonzalez had been using the parking lot of the vacant property as a base for the food truck last fall and again this spring. Another Mexican restaurant, Gorditas Durango, operated in the building for a short time in the winter.
Now, Gonzalez has a full kitchen to use, and he has expanded his hours and menu to include breakfast and other entrees. The entire menu is available all day.
Breakfast items include burritos, huevos rancheros and chilaquiles.
Along with the usual tacos, burritos, quesadillas and nachos, the menu includes mulitas and vampiritos.
The “vampire” is two corn tortillas grilled with melted cheese, choice of meat, avocado and cilantro. Mulitas starts with a fried corn tortilla that’s topped with melted cheese, choice of meat, onion, avocado and cilantro.
The menu includes Mexican versions of a hamburger and hot dog.
Gonzalez has added tortas, or sandwiches, and a variety of other entrees like a chimichanga, flautas, enchiladas and chile relleno.
On the weekend, he serves menudo and grilled chicken with side dishes.
The building at 2300 W. 12th St. has a drive-thru and walk-up counter with a couple of tables on the patio.
Gonzalez gave the building a fresh coat of paint, installed new signs and plans to keep making improvements, said sister-in-law Audrey Chavez.
Gonzalez moved to Sioux Falls from the state of Zacatecas in central Mexico six years ago and worked in a Mexican restaurant. He started the food truck two years ago. His brother, Miguel, is working with him, and he’s also hiring.

Hours are 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. Gonzalez continues to offer catering, and delivery is available through DoorDash. The business uses Facebook for updates.
Gonzalez will continue to use the food truck for events. The long-term goal is to have the food truck operate daily in another part of town, Chavez said.
