Lowcountry Food Bank to offer free meals for kids throughout the summer

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – During summer vacation, some children may not have access to proper meals like they would at school.

Whether it’s because parents and caretakers are at work or if they are experiencing food insecurity, the summer months can be a difficult time for kids without access to nutritious meals.

To help with that, the Lowcountry Food Bank will offer what they call Summer Break Cafes throughout the area, providing meals for children in need.

Starting June 9, there will be over 20 locations serving meals to kids all across the Lowcountry.

“I would never ever want to see a child go without food. I mean, we know that children need proper nutrition to develop. Children need proper nutrition to play and to have fun during the summer. So it just is so important that we ensure that our children are getting nutritious meals,” Lowcountry Food Bank Chief Development Officer Brenda Shaw said.

The locations were selected based on accessibility and where the Lowcountry Food Bank sees the most need for summer meals.

Right now, the state’s food insecurity rate is at a 20-year high, with over 13% of the population falling into that category, of that is nearly 50,000 children.

Shaw said even though this program is federal funding, not all meals are covered, and it is still in need of donations.

“Children shouldn’t have to worry about things like where their next meal is coming from. So we want to make sure that we take the worry, you know, even off the plates of some of the parents,” she said.

This program will last for eight weeks until Aug. 4. All kids 18 and under are able to receive a free meal at one of the locations during the designated time. No sign-up or registration is required.
