Lafayette food bank, Food Finders, faces summer volunteer shortage

LAFAYETTE, IN — Although summer brings vacations and relaxation for many in our community, thefight against hunger never takes a break.

Food Finders Food Bank faces its annual challenge as volunteer numbers traditionally plummet from mid-May through August, coinciding with Purdue University’s summer break and increased family travel.

Despite the seasonal decline in volunteer support, demand for food assistance remains consistently high throughout the summer months. Food Finders is reaching out to local businesses, community organizations, sports teams, youth groups, and communities of faith to help bridge this critical gap, officials said in a news release.

Food Finders requires a minimum of 300 volunteers each week to maintain essential operations. When volunteer ranks thin, the ripple effects affect every aspect of the organization’s mission.

“Volunteers are absolutely crucial to our hunger-fighting mission,” Kier Crites Muller, president/CEO, said in the release. “As we head into summer, our need for volunteers becomes even more pressing.”

Community members can explore volunteer opportunities and sign up for shifts by visiting the volunteer calendar at food-finders.org or calling 765-471-0062.

The food bank offers volunteer shifts designed to accommodate various schedules and group sizes:

  • Individual, family and group opportunities available
  • Shifts typically last two to three hours
  • Day, evening and Saturday options
  • One-time commitments or ongoing weekly/monthly adoption of shifts welcomed
