Heart of Alabama Food Bank in need of donations

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The fight to fund food banks is getting harder.

The US Department of Agriculture recently cut $1 billion dollars in local food assistance funding, taking 1 million pounds worth of food from The Heart of Alabama Food Bank.

“We just have to make it day by day. We have made a promise to people,” said Amy Dennis with The Heart of Alabama Food Bank.

They serve more than 250,000 people while assisting other agencies, and Dennis says the need for help is growing fast.

“We know so much of our community is facing hardship and adversity, and food insecurity is such a big problem in our environment,” said Dennis.

The food bank also stepped in when EBT benefits were being stolen.

While they received money to feed snap recipients, they haven’t received additional monetary support as recipients say their money is still being taken.

“Just that alone pushes us to try harder to tray make process efficient but when you add in obstacles lately were faced with not only reaching those but sustaining those were already serving,” said Dennis.

Dennis says it is a constant battle, and the nearest relief is coming up during WSFA’s annual Summer Fund and Food Drive.

Anyone interested in supporting the Heart of Alabama can do so at the drive on Friday, June 6.
