“Every kid should be able to play”: City of Talladega opens all inclusive park

As summer approaches, city leaders are preparing to help kids have fun in the sun. The city of Talladega just opened its first-ever ADA-compliant park.The Unity Playground Project started in 2023 and is now officially open to the public.The city was able to collect more than $200,000 for the addition to Veterans Park. The park is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.The slides, swings, and other equipment at the park will allow kids to play and have fun regardless of their abilities. Public Information Officer Mary Sood says parents normally have to travel far away from home to accommodate their children’s play dates.”The parents tell us they bring their children to the playground and they can’t use the equipment for example if they’re in a wheel chair they can’t get on the equipment this solves that problem, if they maybe are blind and it’s not safe for them so this meets the needs of so many children and the great thing is families can play together,” Sood said.There are 21 state parks in Alabama, but it’s unclear how many are ADA-compliant.
