The Georgia Department of Public Health, Environmental Health Section, conducts regular restaurant inspections to help keep residents and visitors safe.

The following is a list of restaurants in Richmond and Columbia counties that were inspected May 23-29, accompanied by their scores and, in some cases, the health infractions that lowered those scores.

Here are the restaurants in Richmond and Columbia counties that posted the lowest recent food-service inspections, followed by their scores and, where available, inspectors’ comments. Scores of 70 and below are considered failing:

  • Observed employee go into their purse and then go into the WIC and handle food without washing their hands. Employees must wash their hands after touching personal items.

Barnes & Noble Café, 3450 Wrightsboro Rd., Augusta, 88

  • Observed no paper towels available at the hand washing sinks. Ensure all hand washing sinks are fully supplied at all times.
  • Observed one working container with no labels and left on the counter. Working containers need labels and need to be kept in designated areas while not in use.
  • Observed buildup around rack of the expresso machine. Clean all equipment. Increase cleaning frequency to limit buildup.

  • All employees working in kitchen must have a signed employee illness reporting form on file and available for inspection.
  • Supply all handwash sinks with single use towels, avoid blocking use of sink (do not place items on top or in front of sink).
  • Observed old labels stuck to food containers after cleaning.
  • Observed yogurt, sliced tomatoes, butter above 41F. Cold held foods must be maintained at 41F and below.

Jim N Nick’s Community BBQ, 275 Robert C. Daniel Jr. Pkwy, Augusta, 82

  • Observed meat stored uncovered in the meat cooler. Store all food items covered.
  • Observed several TCS food held above 41 degrees. All TCS food cold held should be 41 degrees and below.
  • Observed scoop improperly stored in sugar and batter. Ensure sure all scoops are properly stored and handles outside of food.
  • Observed wet nesting of clean dishes. Allow dishes to properly air dry before stacking.
  • Observed standing water and debris in meat walk-in-cooler. Clean. Increase cleaning frequency.
