Bicycle Blast teaches kids bike safety for summer

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Dozens of kids want to get outside during the summer, but doing so safely is more important than anything. To promote safety, the Springfield-Greene County Library Willard Branch is hosting Bicycle Blast, allowing kids to have fun while learning at the same time.

Anyone from the ages of 6 to 18 can ride their bike to the library for an obstacle course, free bike helmet certificates while supplies last, and dozens of bike safety tips.

JD Landon, an officer with the Willard Police Department, says that some of the most important things to keep in mind are knowing the rules of the road, as bikers must follow them just like cars or motorcycles do. Knowing how to signal properly is also vital.

“The geographic aspect of it to know what is in your surroundings, what is in your environment,” he added. “What bike trails do they have? What roads have sidewalks and bike lanes? What roads do not? Again, safety is the first thing you gotta begin with. If you’re not safe, you can’t have a good time.”

Part of the fun of the Bicycle Blast includes bike checks to ensure kids’ bikes are in safe condition.

“Get a helmet that will properly fit you so that it will do its job and keep you safe in case there is an accident. Then, you want your bike to be able to stop, so you should check your brakes. You want to be able to check to make sure the chain flows freely, and you also want to be able to check your reflective gear that it is not tattered, worn, or not effective.”

The event takes place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on June 2 at the Willard Branch Library, located near E. Jackson Street.
