USC has two golfers advance in Sections

The United South Central boys golf team participated in the first round of the Section 2A Golf Tournament on Thursday, May 29, at the North Links Golf Club in North Mankato.

As a team the Rebels ended up in seventh place with a team score of 369, and their season as a team came to an end with a 27-31 record.

But one of the USC golfers did advance to the second round of the Section Golf Tournament, which will be played on Monday, June 2, again at the North Links Golf Club. Play on Day 2 of the tourney will decide on which teams and which individuals go on to the State Golf Tournament.

Rebel Brennan Olson shot an 81 last Thursday which was good for fifth place and earned him a ticket to move on to Monday’s Round 2 and a chance at going to State.

The team scores on Day 1 showed Cedar Mountain with a one stroke win for first place with 340, Sleepy Eye United second with 341, MVL third with 354, Alden-Conger fourth at 357, New Ulm Cathedral fifth at 358, Mountain Area sixth at 360 and the USC Rebels seventh at 369.

GHEC-ML-T was eighth at 376, Springfield ninth at 378, Martin County West 10th at 389, Madelia 11th at 427 and JWP did not have a complete team score.

The top four teams moved on to Day 2 of the tourney.

The other USC players’ scores were Dylan Stephens with a 90 for 24th place, Mason Schrader and Colten Husfeldt both shot 99 for a tie for 37th place, Octavio Hernandez shot an even 100 for 43rd place and Ryder Anderson shot 108 for 60th place.

There were 74 golfers who participated in Day 1 of the Section Tournament. Owen Strei, a senior at New Ulm Cathedral, was the medalist with a score of 78.

Girls Section

One member of the United South Central girls golf team has advanced from the first round of the Section 2A Girls Golf Tournament to the second round.

USC’s Emma Heggen shot a 95 at the North Links Golf Club in North Mankato during the first Section round on Tuesday, May 27.

That put her in fourth place and advanced her to Round 2 which will be played on Monday, June 2, again at the North Links Golf Club.

As a team, the Rebel girls shot a score of 471, which was good for seventh place out of the 11 teams in the tourney.

Sleepy Eye United took first with a score of 400. In second was Springfield at 413, Mountain Lake Area third at 420, Alden-Conger fourth at 460, Madelia fifth at 465, GFW sixth at 468, USC seventh at 471, GHEC-ML-T eighth at 472, Martin County West ninth at 482, New Ulm Cathedral 10th at 529 and Cedar Mountain 11th with an incomplete team score.

For USC, Lauren Hansen shot a 120 for 27th place, Maya Hansen a 125 for 36th place and Bella Roberts a 131 for 42nd place.

Sleepy Eye United junior Sam Price was the medalist with a score of 75.

As a team the Rebel girls’ season came to an end with an overall record of 23-14-1.

Gopher Conference Tourney

After four 18-hole rounds of golf, the United South Central boys golf team ended up in third place in the Gopher Conference Tournament, and the USC girls golf team ended up in second place.

Both the boys and girls teams had one member gain All-Conference honors – Brennan Olson for the boys and Emma Heggen for the girls.

The USC boys had a total four-round team score of 1,533. Blooming Prairie was the conference champions with their four-round team score of 1,328, and Randolph was second with a team score of 1,423.

In fourth place was Triton at 1,550, NRHEG fifth at 1,571 and Hayfield sixth at 1,573.

Kenyon-Wanamingo and Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton had incomplete team scores.

For the Rebel girls, their team score for the four rounds was 1,876 for second place. In first place at 1,742 was Triton.

Kenyon-Wanamingo, Hayfield, NRHEG and Blooming Prairie all had incomplete team scores.

USC Boys Team Results

In the fourth round played at Waseca Lakeside Golf Club on Thursday, May 22, the USC boys were in fifth place with a team score of 391.

Blooming Prairie was first with 347, Randolph second at 360, Triton third at 371, NRHEG was fourth at 372. Hayfield was sixth at 420 and Kenyon-Wanamingo and JWP had incomplete team scores.

USC’s Brennan Olson shot a 77 which was good for medalist honors at the conference tournament fourth round. It was his second medalist honors of the season.

Overall Olson ended up in third place after all four rounds were complete with a four-round total of 320, which gave him All-Conference honors.

Olson, a junior, had been All-Conference in 2023 and All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2024.

In the fourth round Dylan Stephens shot a 98 for 23rd place, Colten Husfeldt shot 99 for 25th place, Mason Schrader shot 101 for 27th place, Ryder Anderson carded a 115 for 35th place and Jaxon Hart shot a 121 for 36th place.

Over the four rounds Schrader shot 376 for 16th place, Stephens shot a 410 for 26th place and Anderson shot a 436 for 27th place.

After all four rounds, Coen Abel, an eighth grader at Blooming Prairie shot a total score of 309 and was named Gopher Conference Boys Player of the Year.

After the end of the fourth round the USC boys had a season record of 21-25.

USC Girls Team Results

The USC girls team shot a team total of 481 for the fourth round. Triton, the only other Gopher Conference school to field a whole team, shot a 442 for first place.

Emma Heggen led the team in the fourth round with a score of 93 which was good for fourth place for the days.

Overall Heggen shot a four-round total score of 374 which was good for fourth place in the conference and earned her All-Conference honors for the fifth time.

Other USC fourth round scores were Lauren Hansen with a 122 for 11th place, Bella Roberts a 132 for 13th place, Maya Hansen a 134 for 14th place and Brynlee Olson a 140 for 18th place.

Overall, USC’s four round scores were Lauren Hansen 475 for seventh place, Roberts 520 for 10th place, Maya Hanson 523 for 11th place and Olson 530 for 13th place.

Carly Bronson, a Hayfield junior, was the medalist in all four rounds of the Gopher Conference Tournament. In the fourth round she shot an 86 and for the four rounds she shot a 246 and was named the Gopher Conference Girls Player of the Year.

After the last round of the conference tourney, the USC Rebel girls record is 19-8-1.
