NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) – A heartwarming moment for a few local families on Saturday morning as their children with physical disabilities are gifted battery-powered ride on cars.
Each one modified for the specific child.
“Go Baby Go,” a new set of wheels for a few Connecticut kids.
“Actually being able to see him try and drive it, I could not fathom what that was going to be like,” said Stephanie Fisher.
Each child at Quinnipiac University Saturday morning has some sort of physical disability.
physical and occupational therapy students modified each car for their specific limitations.
“We rewire all the insides so they can push this button on the steering wheel to make the car go, instead of using a pedal,” explained Matt Hom. “It’s really gratifying to see the kids be happy with it and the families, and also from a PT perspective, it really helps with their development.”
1-year-old Iggy was born premature with a genetic condition.
“He’s a little developmentally delayed, but he is the happiest kiddo there ever was,” expressed Fisher.
Iggy’s family was connected to Quinnipiac’s “Go Baby Go” program and now has an important tool for his development and a toy he can enjoy.
“I was a little worried he wouldn’t be able to stay upright, basically, and that would be a safety concern,” added Ryan Emberling. “But now seeing him in the car, I think the way they adjusted the harness, I feel really confident that he’s able to stay upright and in control so he can focus his energy on hitting the button.”
“We want him to have fun. We want him to be safe. And we want him to be able to go where he wants to go,” said Emberling.
