Front Porch Conversations: Reader asks for help with planning summer activities for ‘bored’ kids

“My kids are always saying they’re bored, which drives me crazy because they have every toy and game known to man. Now the summer is here, and I don’t want to listen to how bored they are for the next three months. HELP!”

Welcome to our front porch!

When I was a kid, the last thing I would ever do was tell my parents that I was bored. If I had, it would have certainly unleashed an endless amount of things I probably didn’t want to do. Clean your room, clean the bathroom, do the dishes, cut the grass; or the worst possible response ever – go read a book!

Times sure have changed.

Kids are plugged in and leveled up 24-hours a day now, and the over-stimulation is so much that playing hopscotch or tossing the ball around can’t compete blasting zombies on the XBOX or Snapchatting Tik Toks to their Instagram followers.

The good news is that there is plenty of stuff going on off-screen this summer, and they don’t call our beautiful Mountain State “Almost Heaven” for nothing.

Fishing, hiking, camping, canoeing, mountain biking – these activities are plentiful, and relatively inexpensive for families to participate in. If your kid is more of the indoors-type, just about every town in West Virginia has a youth theatre group or arts program that’s either free, or pretty close to it.

A great place to start is your local Convention and Visitors Bureau. Your child’s school may also know of numerous activities and programs to help get those bored kiddos through the long dog days of summer!
