ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) – On Friday, the Krusin Klassics Fun Run made its final cruise down Ludington Street in Escanaba.
It’s the 40th year for the classic car show and parade. A lot has changed since the Krusin Klassics Car Club started the fun run decades ago.
Live music now kicks off the Friday night parade. And the two-day event has grown from 10 cars in 1985 to between 400 to 600 cars now. But the show’s founders are ready to hang up the keys.
“This is it for the Krusin Klassics. It was a tough decision to make but a lot of factors went into this,” Club President Mark Caswell said. “You know, we’re not getting any younger.”
But the parade is as popular as ever, lasting more than an hour this year.
“Not enough can be said of the impact that Krusin Klassics has had on our community over the 40 or so years that they’ve been in existence,” Escanaba Downtown Development Authority Director Craig Woerpel said.
And while the car club is shutting down its engines, the show will go on with the DDA giving it a new title and registration.
“It’s going to be the Ludington Street Cruise,” Woerpel said. “It is the same parade, new car show. It’s going to be right here on Ludington Street.”
Woerpel says Krusin Klassics came up with the idea to move locations.
“They came to us and said that they were no longer going to put on the show, but they wanted it to continue. And they would like to have it in the downtown,” the DDA director said.
So next year, both Friday’s parade and Saturday’s car show will be on Ludington Street. And Woerpel says, even if 600 cars show up, there’s room.
“Because we have the longest small town downtown in Michigan. So, we can go 22 blocks if we have to,” he added.
But this year, Saturday’s car show will still be at the U.P. State Fairgrounds. Gates open at 8:00 a.m. It costs $5.00 to enter. And kids ages 12 and under get in free.
