Kentucky families can apply for $120 summer food benefit for kids through August

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A summer food program plans to feed roughly 450,000 children in the Commonwealth.

“Everyone should have at least enough to eat,” Gov. Andy Beshear said.

The Summer EBT program gives eligible students a one-time benefit of $120 to purchase nutritious food throughout the summer. Support comes through the federal Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer Program, which began in 2024.

The program will automatically enroll students 6 to 18 -years-old who are current recipients of SNAP, KTAP or Kinship Care benefits, as well as children attending schools participating in the National School Lunch Program.

The goal is to make up for the loss of school meals and address the spike in child hunger that happens over summer break.

“Every child deserves access to nutritious meals year-round, Beshear said. “Especially in a state that produces an abundance of food.”

For families with students not automatically enrolled, applications are available until Aug. 15 at kysebt.ky.gov.

Assistance is also available by calling the Department of Community Based Services at 855-306-8959 or by visiting a local office.

There are also food banks and other local food pantries available year-round in Kentucky and Indiana. Here’s a list of food banks and other resources:
