Free food, fun, and literacy: Little Rock NAACP hosts community bash

Get ready for a day of fun, food, and freebies at Watson Elementary School this Saturday.

The Little Rock NAACP branch is hosting its second annual “Spring into Summer” community bash to celebrate the end of the school year.

Marie Hollowell, President of the Little Rock NAACP, said, “You can expect a lot. Tomorrow, we have a whole plethora of things going on.” The event promises free manicures for girls, haircuts for boys, health screenings for all ages, and a variety of games.

The event will also feature a barbecue and fish fry, courtesy of the Little Rock Sigmas. Hollowell emphasized, “Free food for all. It’s a great family event, and we hope that the whole community comes out to support.”

This year’s bash has a strong focus on literacy, inspired by the Learns Act, which affects students transitioning from third to fourth grade. “We wanted to do our part to encourage the kids to read during the summer,” said Hollowell.

The event is entirely free, and Hollowell encouraged the community to “focus on coming out, being a part of the community, doing some things with your children.”

The bash will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 7000 Volley Street, Watson Elementary School. For those interested in supporting or joining the Little Rock NAACP, more information is available at lrnacp.org.
