Transfer news LIVE: Arsenal line up £92m striker, Wirtz to Liverpool and medical

Opta Profile: Liam Delap – Chelsea’s striker problem solved?

Premier League clubs are putting plans in place for the summer transfer window which initially opens for a short window between June 1 and June 10 in the hopes of getting deals done ahead of the Club World Cup.

Manchester United have an awful lot of work to do in the window after a disastrous season, and Matheus Cunha appears to be the first one through the door, with Wolves set to bank more than £60m for the Brazilian forward. There could also be exits from Old Trafford, though, with captain Bruno Fernandes among those being linked with moves away.

Liverpool are ready to go from strength to strength after winning the Premier League title, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz on the wish list for a rumoured £125m as while Jeremie Frimpong is close to a medical ahead of the switch to Anfield to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Arsenal, meanwhile, look to be close to their first addition with Martin Zubimendi set for a medical and Mikel Arteta has seemingly sanctioned talks with RB Leipzig over striker Benjamin Sesko.

Gabriel set for new Arsenal deal

BBC Sport say that Arsenal are in advanced negotiations with Gabriel over a new contract.

His current deal at the club is set to expire in 2027 but talks are progressing.

Gabriel featured in 42 games for Mikel Arteta’s side but missed the final 12 games of the season due to a hamstring injury.

He is expected to be fit for the start of the 2025/26 campaign and is a crucial leader in the backline having crafted a fine partnership with William Saliba.

Ruben Amorim frustrated at poor results

With Manchester United on a post season tour of Asia, Ruben Amorim knows that only positive results will make his job to improve the team easier.

“We need to face our fans in this moment and we want to give something to our fans around the world,” he said.

“We want to do that but sometimes it is really hard for us. Sometimes after the games I’m really frustrated, I’m trying to control that but the only thing I want is to improve the team and have results.

Real Madrid want early Alexander-Arnold release

Real Madrid are now back in talks with Liverpool about an early release for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The right-back is contracted at Anfield until June 30 and the Spanish club will have to pay a fee to Liverpool if they want to sign him sooner.

The urgency is that new manager Xabi Alonso wants Alexander-Arnold in the Club World Cup squad with that tournament beginning on June 15.

Liverpool are under no obligation to release him before 30 June and want a fee from Madrid to do so.

Real have offered to pay Alexander-Arnold’s June wages but that isn’t enough for Liverpool. Negotiations are ongoing.

Arsenal close in on Martin Zubimendi

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

The Gunners have made the 26-year-old their primary target in the summer transfer window and are reported to have met the Spain international’s £51m release clause.

A medical is said to be booked for the coming days.

Boss Mikel Arteta will hope Zubimendi’s reported arrival will kickstart a strong summer of recruitment in a bid to make the next step with his Arsenal side.

Arteta is facing questions after three successive seasons of finishing second in the Premier League, with the most recent campaign seen as a regression after failing to capitalise on Manchester City’s drop-off.

The Gunners are also thought to be in the market for a striker, having seen Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz suffer serious injuries in the second half of last season.

Chelsea open keen to keep Sancho

Chelsea are reportedly keen to keep hold of Jadon Sancho beyond this season.

Sky Sports claim talks have opened with the Manchester United loanee to see if they can agree on terms in which his contract fits the wage structure at the club.

Sancho joined Chelsea on loan from Manchester United last August and Chelsea now have a £25m obligation to buy. However, they can pay United a £5m penalty to get out of that obligation.

Of all the rumours swirling around, the Blues signing Sancho permanently is one of the more probable ones.

But, there highest value player is the one they can’t afford to lose: Bruno Fernandes.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Fernandes’ agent Miguel Pinho travelled to Saudi Arabia this week to discuss terms with Al Hilal.

Hilal who hope to sign him in time for the Club World Cup insist that Fernandes hasn’t rejected their offer.
