New Program Provides Grant Money for Food Truck Electrification and Energy-Efficient Upgrades

The Food Truck Electrification & Efficiency program has launched in Boulder County to provide grants to mobile businesses for making energy-efficient upgrades to their battery systems and equipment. The program is available to licensed businesses in Boulder County. The program is a joint venture between Partners for a Clean Environment (PACE) and the Regional Air Quality Council (RAQC). The program will provide businesses up to 80 percent of the cost for electric battery systems or energy-efficient kitchen equipment.

“Food trucks are an essential part of our community and culture,” said PACE’s programming and community relations specialist, Norma King. “We’re excited to launch a program that helps the more than 180 mobile businesses in Boulder County thrive while reducing pollution.”

PACE is hosting a Food Truck Electrification Rally on Tuesday, June 3 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Latino Chamber of Commerce in Longmont, which will include electrified food truck demos, expert advice, and free food and drinks. RAQC and PACE will have staff on hand to provide support for vendors and small businesses interested in making energy-efficient upgrades to their food trucks. Attendees can RSVP online.

The program will provide grant funding on a first-come, first-served basis for various energy-efficient upgrades, including zero-emission battery power and solar systems, refrigerators, prep tables, and cooking equipment. A gas-powered generator that runs for eight hours emits the same amount of carbon dioxide as burning 83 pounds of coal.

“Together, we’re building a future fueled by clean electricity,” said Boulder County’s director of sustainability, Susie Strife. “By electrifying everything we currently run on gas or natural gas — even food trucks — we can create healthier communities, improve air quality, and reduce costs.”
