GREENLAND — Greenland Central School raised over $12,000 for the American Heart Association this year. GCS was a top ten school in New Hampshire for fundraising and for the number of kids who completed Finn’s mission. Finn, is a third grader who has had multiple heart surgeries and is a heart hero.
Twenty-five students completed Finn’s mission: they created their own donation pages, they donated some of their own money, they sent messages and asked others for donations, and they learned about the warning signs of stroke. The annual Kids Heart Challenge event helps kids with special hearts. Students learn about ways to keep their hearts healthy in Physical Education class. Depending on the amount of money raised, US Games (a Physical Education equipment supplier), donates gift certificates to schools to use toward acquiring new equipment. Last year, physical education teacher Mrs. Gosselin, used those certificates to purchase a new climbing rope. Climbing ropes can increase students’ strength and fitness levels, and can be used not only for climbing, but for swinging and for obstacle courses. In addition, Mrs. Gosselin purchased black lights, decorations, and light up glow bands to use at this year’s KHC kick off glow party in P.E. class. Students rotated through stations that kept them active: jumping rope, using the bean bag toss boards, playing mini-golf, as well as learning hands-only CPR.
Another motivator for students to raise money for the American Heart Association was the annual slime event. Two students from each grade (who donated to KHC), had the opportunity to slime a GCS staff member this spring.
Lastly, a special shout out to Jack and Axel Franck who raised a combined amount of $1,805.85 for AHA. Thank you to everyone who donated to help kids with special hearts.
