Syracuse, N.Y. — One of Syracuse’s most beloved pubs is about to get another taste of national fame.
Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub & Restaurant, the anchor of Fayette and Franklin streets for the past 25 years, will be featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” this Friday night at 9 p.m. on the Food Network.
Hosted by Guy Fieri, the show highlights iconic dishes from hidden gems across the country. This week’s episode is called “From Barbecue to Boxty,” and it includes a stop in Syracuse.
Owner David Hoyne said he got the call last year that Guy’s crew wanted to revisit Kitty Hoynes. The pub first appeared on the show back in 2012, when Fieri raved about the Reuben fritters and the Irish meatloaf.
“They told us they wanted to feature a couple of new dishes,” Hoyne said. “So we delivered.”
He brought two show-stoppers: lamb sliders topped with goat cheese and red onion marmalade, and Kilkenny boxty potato cakes, a traditional Irish dish that blends shredded potatoes, butter and cream into a golden, griddle-crisped cake. It’s like a potato pancake with an Irish accent.
Fieri’s film crew visited the pub in March, and while the spiky-haired mayor of Flavortown wasn’t in the building for this segment, his crew captured all the kitchen action led by by Chef Damien Brownlow, who helped develop the featured dishes.
Fieri visited other local restaurants in 2012, including Funk ‘n Waffles, Eva’s European Sweets and Byblos Mediterranean Café.
Kitty Hoynes will have an informal watch party on Friday night at the pub.
