The credit for Notre Dame football’s Marcus Freeman is starting to roll in, as The Sporting News has ranked him as its No. 4 head coach in the country.
It was a big leap for the Irish’s lead man, as he was ranked No. 22 last year, but showed that his team is capable of competing for championships and has staying power. Bill Bender, who compiled the list said that they weren’t about to “second-guess” the move up.
With 24 wins over the last two seasons, and an impressive 7-1 against top-25 teams in 2024, Bender was compelled to move Freeman near the top of the list. Only Georgia’s Kirby Smart, Ohio State’s Ryan Day, and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney were ahead of him on the rankings. It makes perfect sense, as they are the only active head coaches who have won a national championships.
Checking in on our old friend, former Notre Dame and current LSU head coach Brian Kelly was No. 9 on this list, falling from No. 5 last year. With Freeman in charge of the Irish program, it seems like its only a matter of time before they break though and end the championship drought that has lasted since 1988.
