As 50 Cent breaks ground on G-Unit Studios in Shreveport, fans are remembering his first multimedia move, a retro video game classic.
Long before 50 Cent started his journey to Shreveport with G-Unit Studios, 50 was the star of his own gritty video game, 50 Cent: Bulletproof. The game is regarded today as a classic of the PlayStation 2 era of video games, and while we wait for G-Unit to start production in Shreveport, the game is a great blast of nostalgia in the meantime.
Released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, 50 Cent: Bulletproof is a third-person action game featuring the man himself, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. The game was perfect for its time, an open world run-and-gun action game in an era of games like Grand Theft Auto: Vice City or The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.
More than just being the right genre at the right time, the game is loved and remembered by fans like us here in Shreveport for the cameos from G-Unit crew members like Dr. Dre and Eminem. The soundtrack is a full album of songs 50 Cent made just for the game, adding an extra nostalgia blast with songs you can only hear in the game.
(The album was released as a CD as well, but hasn’t made it to online streaming platforms, though some of the songs like “Maybe We Crazy” have been put on other mixtapes you can find online.)
Now, the star of the game is investing heaps of money into Shreveport, kick-starting G-Unit Studios and transforming the Red River City into a hub for movie filming. For Shreveport natives who grew up smashing the buttons on their controller to complete 50 Cent’s missions, the game is brimming with memories, and soon 50 Cent will be making new memories for those same natives.
