SPCA gets huge food donation, shares the whole kit and caboodle

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – A massive donation of cat food has found its way to the bowls of hungry felines across the CSRA, thanks to a partnership between Birdie & Louie, Best Friends Animal Society and the SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare.

In May, the SPCA Albrecht Center was told it would get five pallets — 38,880 cans — of premium Birdie & Louie canned cat food through an offer from Best Friends Animal Society, of which the Albrecht Center is a network partner.

Marketing Director Sarah Neikam quickly reached out to fellow local animal welfare organizations to offer them a share of the bounty.

On Tuesday, a semi-truck delivered the donation to the SPCA’s facility in Aiken, and local rescue groups began arriving in vans, trucks, and trailers to load up. Organizations that benefited from the distribution included:

  • Aiken County Animal Shelter and Friends of the Animal Shelter
  • Kitty Konnection
  • Humane Society of McCormick County
  • Hands to Paws Organization
  • Friends of Felines
  • Dog & Cat Networking Agents
  • That’s What Friends Are For Inc.
  • Wayne Heath of Wayne Heath Automotive Company (local rescuer)
  • Jenn Kraus of Uprooted Vegan Cuisine (local rescuer)

In addition to feeding the cats in their care, many of these organizations plan to share the food with partner rescues, foster families, individual community caregivers and through local blessing boxes for those in need.

By day’s end, all 38,880 cans were distributed.

“Thanks to all of you who are part of this community, looking out for our collective cat population,” SPCA shelter manager Allison LaBorde said. “I’m so glad we have been able to share in this gift.”
