Police urge summer safety as kids head outside

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – With summer break just days away, La Crosse Police are reminding families to make safety a priority as more children head outdoors.

As sidewalks and parks grow busier, officers say both drivers and pedestrians need to stay alert.

“We need people to be very aware of their surroundings and be careful crossing the street,” said Lt. Linnea Miller with the La Crosse Police Department. “Look both ways, take your time, and don’t run into traffic thinking cars will stop. Especially our youngsters—they might not be seen as easily. So, use crosswalks, stop, and wait until it’s safe.”

Police are also reminding families that helmets aren’t just for kids.

Whether you’re biking, skating, or scootering, they say protective gear is essential at any age.

Parents are encouraged to supervise children near water and to think carefully about when kids are ready to go out alone.

Officers suggest easing into independence by staying nearby or sending kids out in groups.

With longer days and later nights, visibility is key.

Reflective clothing, bike lights, and flashlights can help prevent accidents after dark.
