CHAMPAIGN — Illinois volleyball will open its 2025 Big Ten schedule in nearly the same way it did last fall with Oregon as its first conference opponent. This time the match is at Huff Hall, the first of a 20-game league slate the Illini will face this fall.
The westward expansion of the Big Ten means playing most of the teams in the conference just one time. Illinois’ home-and-home conference series this coming season will feature two matches apiece against Purdue, Wisconsin and in-state rival Northwestern. The Illini will play Final Four qualifier Nebraska just once (Nov. 6 in Lincoln, Neb.) and reigning NCAA champions Penn State also once (Nov. 9 in Champaign).
Illinois is coming off an 18-13 season in 2024 that saw the Illini finish eighth in the Big Ten with a 10-10 record. It was enough to make the NCAA tournament, but Illinois bowed out in the first round in a four-set loss to Northern Iowa.
Half of Illinois’ 2025 roster is newcomers between freshmen and key transfers like setter Kenna Phelan (Florida State), opposite (Auburn Tomkinson) and defensive specialist Devin Dzienny (Florida).
