SOUTHEASTERN N.C. (WECT) – The YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina has launched an expanded Summer Food Service Program to help provide free meals for children across the region.
Starting in May and all through August, children will receive food boxes at sites across Pender, Brunswick and Sampson Counties that contain seven days’ worth of breakfasts and lunches.
“The boxes adhere to USDA guidelines and contain the five components of a balanced meal including fruit, vegetables, whole grains, a meat/meat alternative, and milk,” YMCA organizers wrote in a press release.
Last year, 54,000 breakfasts and lunches were distributed around the region. The program now includes two more sites in Brunswick County and a new site in Harnett County.
The sites will distribute food on the following schedules:
1. Fridays in Brunswick County (5/3/25 – 8/22/25)
- Brunswick Family Assistance in Bolivia
- Southport Presbyterian in Southport
- Camp United Methodist Church in Shallotte
2. Tuesdays & Wednesdays in Pender County (5/27/25 – 8/20/25)
- Tuesdays at Camp Kirkwood in Watha
- Wednesdays at Paul’s Place in Rocky Point
- Wednesdays at Family Dollar in Burgaw
You can pre-register at the YMCA’s website. For more details on the food service program, email Director of Food Services Amy Hobbs here.
