On World Hunger Day, employees from WK Kellogg volunteered at the South Michigan Food Bank to help fight food insecurity across eight counties in southern Michigan.
Employees packed boxes of non-perishable food for the over 130,000 people in the region served by the food bank.
According to WK Kellogg, food insecurity rates are at the highest they’ve been in more than 20 years.
“It’s almost unfathomable, isn’t it? That, in a country with the means of the United States, that food insecurity rates are as high as they are?” WK Kellogg Chief Growth Officer Doug VanDeVelde said. “What we find is the summer, sometimes, is even worse for people, for kids, especially who aren’t in school, which is a big way they have access to food.”
Due to that increase in food insecurity for students following the end of the school year, WK Kellogg doubled down on their efforts to combat food insecurity.
The packaged meals are expected to be given to those in need through “Mobile Markets,” South Michigan Food Bank’s “pantry on wheels” that are tailored to serve rural areas.
“Giving back to the community is really part of the DNA of our company,” VanDeVelde said. “Our founder, Mr. Kellogg, was one of the best at giving back to the community. So, all of our employees, we really feel like it’s part of who we are and what we do.”
Established in Battle Creek in 1982, South Michigan Food Bank provides over 11,000,000 pounds of food annually, according to the non-profit’s website.
