DELAWARE, Ohio (WSYX) — The Strand Theatre is set to host its annual Free Summer Kids Series from June 3 to July 29, offering free weekly screenings at the historic cinema located at 28 E. Winter St.
While admission is free, attendees are encouraged to donate designated items each week to support local nonprofit organizations.
Renamed in 2023 as The Sandy Hardymon Free Summer Kids Series, the event pays tribute to Sandy Hardymon, a beloved figure in Delaware County. Sandy was known for her diverse talents as a singer, TV host, actress, Miss Indiana, marketing and advertising executive, and executive director of a nonprofit foundation. Her husband, Steve, fondly remembered her contributions, saying, “With her beautiful smile and infectious enthusiasm, children were drawn to her. Sponsoring this series is an appropriate way to remember the love she spread every day.”
Tracey Peyton, the theater’s managing director, emphasized the series’ mission.
“The mission is to offer Delaware children free daytime entertainment, teach them to give to those in need and provide essential supplies to local charities that benefit from these donations.” Peyton added, “The Strand takes immense pride in this long-standing program as their way of service to the community – giving from one generation to the next!”
The series will feature two shows on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., with doors opening 30 minutes prior. The 2024 lineup includes:
- June 3: The Wizard of Oz
- June 10: Kung Fu Panda 4
- June 17: If
- June 24: The Wild Robot
- July 8: Despicable Me 4
- July 15: Sonic The Hedgehog 3
- July 22: The Garfield Movie
- July 29: Beethoven
Peyton expressed the impact of the series, stating, “When we can instill this spirit of generosity at such an early age, this is only a glimpse of what is to come – a future of charitable adults, which is something that all nonprofits need. It makes my heart melt to see our patrons answer this call to action. It makes my job very rewarding.”
