Spectrum Brands Pet recalls turtle food over Salmonella concerns

Spectrum Brands Pet has issued a voluntary recall of a specific lot of its Tetra ReptoMin 3-in-1 SELECT-A-FOOD reptile food due to the potential presence of Salmonella

The recall applies only to 1.56 oz containers with lot code 951790 and UPC 0 46798 78626 9. The product is intended for aquatic turtles and was distributed nationwide through Petco, Walmart, Chewy, Amazon and Meijer between May 6 and May 16, 2025.

While no illnesses have been reported in pets or humans, the company is recalling the affected lot out of an abundance of caution and in coordination with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Internal testing by the company did not detect Salmonella in the final product but did identify the possible presence of Salmonella in one of the components used in the 3-in-1 blend.

Salmonella poses a risk to both humans and animals. Infected pets, including turtles, may appear lethargic or show symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, or fever. Even if asymptomatic, they can still carry the bacteria and pose a transmission risk to humans or other animals.

People handling the recalled product or any surfaces it touches are advised to thoroughly wash their hands and disinfect any bowls, utensils, or storage containers used with the food. Symptoms of Salmonella infection in humans may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever, with more serious complications possible in rare cases.

Consumers whose pets have consumed the recalled lot and are showing symptoms should contact a veterinarian. The lot number can be found on the bottom of the container. No other lots or Tetra products are impacted by the recall.

Spectrum Brands Pet is continuing its investigation in collaboration with its suppliers.
