Schumer, local food banks rally against historic food assistance cuts in Trump budget

Rochester, N.Y. — Food assistance is a vital source for many families across the country, but some of those critical services are in jeopardy.

President Donald Trump’s sweeping budget plan, which just passed the House last week, includes the largest cut to food assistance in the country’s history.

Sen. Chuck Schumer joined food bank leaders and others in Rochester Tuesday, calling for a united front to save these benefits.

He said 24 truckloads of produce for Foodlink’s pantries have been cancelled due to Trump’s historic bill, which also includes the largest cut to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

“I just can’t imagine families that have to worry about feeding their children, and then you have the disabled people who need stamps and seniors, but I know children who have suffered, just being in the community, and they’re heartless — to me, they’re heartless. And they know children who have suffered. It’s one thing when adults suffer, but when children suffer, it’s a tragedy.”

Trump said cutting certain services is needed to reduce government spending.
