MT VERNON, Ind. (WFIE) – For some families, the simple act of providing extra meals during summer vacation can be a real challenge.
“There really is a need, especially right now with all the challenges with the economy. People not sure what’s going to happen with food stamps, people not sure what’s going to happen with their jobs, and that’s one thing we want to take of their plate,” said IGA General Manager, Larry Williams.
This year, the Williams family is expanding a program they’ve run for several years, offering free lunches to children in need at McKim’s IGA.
“You don’t have to worry about your kids getting fed,” said Williams.
Now, any child, regardless of age, can receive a free peanut butter sandwich, a small bag of chips, and a bottle of water.
IGA General Manager, Larry Williams says that simple gesture can make all the difference.
“I was standing up front checking one day and I felt a little tug on my back pocket and turned around and a little boy was standing there and I said ‘can I do something for you’ and I was expecting him to start complaining about something, but he had a bag in his hands and said ‘thank you’. And it it hit me hard,” said Williams.
Parents simply need to go to the deli counter and ask for the ‘school lunch’ — no questions asked, no judgment and no shame.
“I have four grandchildren and I would like to think that if something happened to me or something happened to them, that somebody would take care of the same way and that’s why we do this,” said Williams.
