
HENDERSON — Henderson County Schools will start free summer meals for kids Wednesday.
According to the HCS Nutrition Department, the summer program is in place to make sure every kid continues to get nutritious meals even when school is out.
Meals are free to all kids ages 18 and younger or a person 19-21 years old with a mental or physical disability who still participates in a school program, according to HCS.
Adult meals are available for purchase at $3.50, cash only.
Meal times in Henderson
Starting Wednesday, meals will be provided:
- Breakfast: 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.
- Lunch: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Henderson County Schools are also asking any club or activity this summer serving HCS students to reach out if there is a need for meal support.
This includes community events, vacation bible schools and local businesses hosting summer programs.

Food insecurity in Henderson County
According to the latest data available from Feeding America, Henderson County has an 17.8% food insecurity rating. This means around 7,930 residents in Henderson County do not have enough food due to either financial or other access-related reasons.
Out of those residents, 25% are above the SNAP threshold, meaning they do not qualify for assistance through it or other programs like WIC.
The data from Feeding America allows a population breakdown, including children. As of 2023, around 2,450 kids in Henderson County were considered food insecure.
