Sports Editor Matt Daniels with a look at what’s going on around the area:
Champaign Central graduate Tanner Gordon started for the Rockies on Friday night and picked up his first MLB win. The right-hander threw six innings and only gave up five hits to the New York Yankees, with the Rockies holding on for a 3-2 win in Denver.
Three reasons we love sports today
➜ 1. Tanner Gordon. The 27-year-old Champaign Central graduate picked up his first MLB career win this past Friday night. Against the New York Yankees, no less.
➜ 2. The right-hander made his second start of the season for the Rockies, and, for the most part, kept the Yankees off-balance as the Rockies delivered a rare 3-2 win at Coors Field. Gordon threw six innings, gave up two runs on five hits and two walks, but struck out five.
➜ 3. Recalled by the Rockies from Class AAA Albquerque on May 23, Gordon appears like he’ll stick around in starting rotation. Mainly because he’s expected to start again at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Wrigley Field against the Cubs. Pretty cool moment.
Former Illini Terrence Shannon Jr. had the best playoff game of his young career on Saturday night.
Numbers game: 15
points in 13 minutes off the bench by former Illini Terrence Shannon Jr. with the Minnesota Timberwolves during this past Saturday night’s 143-101 rout of the Oklahoma City Thunder during Game 3 of the Western Conference finals. Most of his scoring came in a critical stretch to start the second quarter in Shannon’s most meaningful playoff minutes in his young NBA career.
The Monticello girls’ soccer team will try to win another piece of IHSA hardware on Tuesday when the Sages host Williamsville in a Class 1A sectional championship match.
Crowd control
Three events I’m paying attention to
➜ 1. Williamsville at Monticello girls’ soccer. Beat the visiting Bullets (22-5) and the host Sages (25-3) will win the first sectional championship in program history. This Class 1A Sweet 16 matchup begins at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
➜ 2. Marshall at Unity softball. The host Rockets (31-4) look to keep their successful season going when they welcome the Lions (22-8) to Tolono for a Class 2A sectional semifinal game at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
➜ 3. Arcola vs. Salt Fork softball. If Salt Fork (26-4) or Arcola (13-12) wins this Class 1A Argenta-Oreana Sectional semifinal game that starts at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, they get either Central A&M (15-15) or LeRoy (31-5) at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the Sweet 16.
