The next generation of green thumbs made a big impression at this year’s Southern Humboldt Garden Club Flower Show, held Sunday, May 18. Youth entries in the Junior Room were a highlight of the event, showcasing creativity, skill, and a blossoming love for horticulture.
Under the guidance of volunteers and teachers, local students submitted a remarkable 41 entries across four sections, with many students creating multiple arrangements. In the days leading up to the show, kids worked hard to prepare their exhibits. A generous donation of FloraLife flower food helped keep the arrangements fresh through the weekend.
The results were inspiring:
- Section A: Silas and Gavin tied for Most Points. Silas took home Best Design, while Gavin won for Depicting the Theme. They each won $5.
- Section B: This was the most popular section, with 15 entries. Lindsey stood out, entering five classes and winning first place in most.
- Section C: Nola earned Best Design, Milo won Single Specimen, and Garrett earned Most Points.
- Section D: Max won Best Design, Sawyer took Single Specimen, and Ryder secured Most Points.
Top Honors went to Lindsey, who impressed judges across the board. She received Best Design, Best Container (for her beautifully sprouted sweet potato), Most Points with 12 total, and Best of Show. Lindsey walked away with six purple ribbons and a big smile.
Judges were thoroughly impressed by the students’ efforts and offered thoughtful feedback for next year.
“The judges kept saying how proud we should be of what the kids accomplished,” said Jan Vaughn, who coordinated the Junior Room.
