Neighbors reeling after man allegedly tried to hit kids, cut woman in Jacobs neighborhood

Residents of Carpenter Apartments in the Jacobs neighborhood are reeling after a shocking incident on Saturday evening that left children and adults traumatized. Mohamed Rukaw, a resident of the complex, was arrested and now faces five felony charges, including three counts of wanton endangerment and two counts of assault.According to neighbors, the trouble began over a basketball hoop set up in the parking lot for children to play. Witnesses say Rukaw moved the hoop to the grass, drove away, and then drove his vehicle toward a group of children playing basketball.Zina Williams, whose 8-year-old grandson Zeke was among the children, described the chaos.”The day of the incident, we were down the street, and you could just see and hear kids just running and screaming,” she said.Zeke, himself, recounted the terrifying moment.”He pushed down a basketball while playing basketball and activities and he tried to run over us and the rest of them,” he said. Maurice Hobbs, another resident who owns the basketball hoop, said he watched the events unfold from his window.”I sat in my window and watched. He left — swerved, kept swerving to try to hit the kids,” Hobbs said.The situation escalated further when neighbors confronted Rukaw. Police say he struck one woman and attacked Hobbs’ niece with a kitchen knife, causing cuts to her face and hand.”I don’t understand it. It’s like he was mad at the world or something, and he was just angry,” Hobbs said.Williams also described the confrontation.”He was like, ‘I’m going to kill all of y’all.’ And then the other mother, she was like, ‘What did I do to you? Why are you so angry?’ And he just came out and started swinging. We didn’t even know the knife was in his hand,” Williams said. Rukaw was arrested and charged Sunday morning. His bond was set at $25,000, and a no-contact order has been issued. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 3.Neighbors say the incident has left emotional scars, particularly for the children who witnessed the violence.”They had to stand and watch all of this. So, how much trauma is that going to give them? Who’s going to pay for that?” Williams said.Despite the distress, Hobbs expressed determination to see justice served.”I’ll be in court when he goes. I’m going. I think a lot of us feel that way,” he said.Hobbs’ niece, who required medical attention for her injuries, is now out of the hospital and recovering. Residents hope the incident will serve as a wake-up call to ensure the safety and well-being of the community’s children.
