While The Last of Us was Ramsey’s big break, it certainly won’t be the last major role for an actor of their caliber. For now, though, the actor does feel drawn toward their roots. They just wrapped up their first week of filming in Scotland for a dramedy about children with cancer called Sunny Dancer. “It’s like the antithesis of The Last of Us. It’s a small set, low-budget. It’s incredible, I’m having so much fun,” they say. Their focus for the rest of the year is smaller independent projects — a nice change for the big star.
With the spectacle of HBO’s coveted Sunday night slot winding down, Bella Ramsey is certainly still working just as hard, but on passion projects — and on themself. The prospect of playing a character closer to home calls to them. “I’ve never played a nonbinary person in anything or a trans person. Getting to do that would feel very special,” they say. And whether they pick up The Artist’s Way again or not, Ramsey is ready for whatever comes next. “I want to be challenged,” they say, “continually challenged.”
