Portage celebrates 27th Roof Sit with dinner, car show & puppy pile for a good cause

The Community Health Center’s (CHC) 27th annual Roof Sit is getting underway in Portage Thursday with a kick-off dinner to benefit local children at the corner of South Westnedge and Milham Avenue.

Roof Sit is a yearly charity event in which people camp out on the roof of a building to raise awareness of and money for abuse and neglected children in the Kalamazoo area.

Proceeds will fund continued free treatment for kids and their non-offending family members at the CHC’s Children’s Advocacy Center.

News Channel 3 spoke with officials from the healing center about the three-day event.

“We focus on really early childhood and just preventing any trauma or mental health health issues that could come up with children,” Alisa Otto, chief executive officer of Community Healing Center, said. “We offer in-home services for kids. We do outpatient services for kids. We offer forensic interviews for kids who have been physically or sexually abused. So we serve the most vulnerable. And so we really focus on that, that population to make sure that they have the services that they need.”

Donations are already being collected down at the Roof Sit, but the event will officially kick off Thursday night with a celebration dinner, as well as live music and a live auction.

Friday, there’ll be a “Light Up the Night” car show. Featuring Vader Nation and Ibison Concessions, this event begins at dusk, according to Roof Sit’s website.

Saturday, there will be a “Woof Sit,” an annual “Puppy Pile” in partnership with the SPCA of Southwest Michigan.
