The Last of Us season two is set to finish later this week, with episode seven of season two being released on HBO and Max on May 25, 2025. While the source material for The Last of Us consists of just two games, fans know that one more episode isn’t anywhere near enough to finish up the story the games told, and that at least one more season is needed to do it justice. Now, we know there’s actually going to be at least two more seasons.
In an interview with Collider, The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin revealed that the show would ideally run for four seasons, with plenty more of the game’s story still to be adapted onto the screen. Mazin says that wrapping up the story “would take forever,” saying that the major events in season two have had such an impact that it would be impossible to finish up the narrative in just three seasons.

“The thing about Joel’s death is that it’s so impactful,” Mazin says in the interview. “It’s such a narrative nuclear bomb that it’s hard to wander away from it. We can’t really take a break and move off to the side and do a Bill and Frank story. I’m not sure that will necessarily be true for Season 3. I think we’ll have a little more room there. But certainly, there’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome.”
Mazin also says that season three of the show is likely to be a bit longer than season two, and that viewers “haven’t gotten all the information that you deserve,” and that the information is coming. “We did this all by design,” he says.
HBO’s The Last of Us has been a huge success, especially for a TV adaptation of a video game, which has historically seen mixed results. The series’ first season attracted near universal acclaim from critics, with a score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the second season has so far come in just barely below it, with a score of 95%. The series mostly follows the story of the games upon which it’s based, though there have been a few changes and deviations, most of which have been received well by fans of the games.
It’s not currently known when The Last of Us will return to TV following its season two finale this weekend.
