Illinois lands grad transfer Gisela Segura

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois bolstered its depth on the wing Tuesday by signing Long Island transfer Gisela Segura. The 5-foot-11 forward spent the 2024-25 season with the Sharks after playing at Division II Franklin Pierce University from 2020-24.

“I chose Illinois because it feels like they are more than just a basketball program,” Segura said in an official release. “From the moment I connected with the coaches, I knew this was a place where I could grow not just as an athlete, but as a person. The energy, the vision, and the culture at Illinois all align with who I am and who I’m striving to become. I am excited to embrace the challenge, represent Illinois, and give everything I’ve got to this journey.”

Segura started 20 of 22 games at LIU last season and averaged 5.1 points and three rebounds. She shot 36 percent from the field overall, 22 percent from three-point range and 53 percent at the free throw line.

“”I am super excited to have Gisela join our (family),” Illinois coach Shauna Green said in the same release. “She brings experience to our program and a competitive spirit of doing whatever it takes to help us win. I can’t wait to get her to campus and get to work.”

Originally from Cervera, Spain, Segura will be one of six international players on the 2025-26 Illinois roster. That group will also include redshirt freshman guard Irene Noya Catoira (Spain), redshirt sophomore center Lety Vasconcelos (Brazil), redshirt freshman forward Cearah Parchment (Canada), redshirt freshman guard Erica Finney (Australia) and freshman forward Manuela Alves (Brazil). Parchment and Finney were both early enrollees during the 2024-25 season, but did not play.
